Cornas, France: Auguste Clape

J’ai fait une petite folie vendredi dernier… Hé oui, on se dit toujours que les grandes bouteilles ont en encore sous la pédale et pour finir, on ne les OUVRE et les BOIT jamais…! Alors ça suffit.

Là, j’ai ouvert probablement le plus grand vin de l’appellation Cornas (Côtes du Rhône, France), celui du domaine Auguste Clape. Je l’ai reçu d’un ami pour mon anniversaire… Elle n’aura pas fait long feu.

1997, piètre millésime sur le papier: un début d’été froid et humide, suivi d’un mois d’août chaud et changeant et d’une vendange relativement humide dans le nord des Côtes du Rhône. Même Parker nous dit que ce 1997 aurait mieux été bu avant 2009…Mince!

Je vais vous dire… Heureusement qu’on a attendu dix ans de plus…! Après une heure d’ouverture, le vin se montre frais, vigousse et plein d’énergie. De la fraise, de la fraise et de la fraise…! Finement compotée avec une belle fraîcheur. Des tannins fins, mûres et tout en dentelle qui nous rappellent le profile de ce millésime frais, se déroulant sur une finale longue et suave. Une sublime Syrah tout en finesse!

Last Friday I had that crazy idea to open one of my top wines in the cellar … Yes, we always keep them, waiting for right occasion… and therefore never OPEN and DRINK them…! So guys, that’s enough.

I probably opened  the greatest wine of the Cornas AC (Northern Rhône Valley, France), the one of Domaine Auguste Clape. I received it from a friend for my birthday this year… It has not last long.

1997, poor vintage on paper: a cold and wet early summer, followed by a hot and unsettled August and a relatively wet harvest in the Northern part of the Valley. Even Parker tells us that this 1997 would have been better drunk before 2009 … Bummer!

Well, thankfully we waited another ten years because the wine was just fantastic! After an hour of opening, the wine offered a fresh and vibrant vibe. Strawberry, strawberry and strawberry …! Slightly candied with a lovely freshness. Very refined and delicate tannins that remind us of this fresh yet ripe vintage profile, rolling on a long and silky finish. A mind-blowing Syrah with finesse!
